On Tuesday evening, the Neuqua Valley girls basketball team faced off against fellow regional semifinalists from last season, the Batavia Bulldogs. The Wildcats got off to a fast start, scoring off of the opening tip and continuing the onslaught with the combination of a smothering zone defense and excellent ball movement. At the end of the first quarter, the Wildcats held a commanding 11-2 advantage.
Not to be outdone, the Batavia Bulldogs came roaring back in the second quarter, going on a 14-0 run to take the halftime lead. The Bulldogs carried that momentum into the second half and ended the third period of play with a 33-29 lead.
In the fourth quarter, the Wildcats came roaring back led by Megan Callahan who led all scorers with 21 points on the night. Gabby Thomas also added eight points and hit two long jumpers in the closing minutes to ice the game. In the end, it was the Wildcats on the winning end of a 54-45 final score.
While this is only the first game of the season, if this contest is any indication of things to come, the Wildcats will be a formidable foe in the 2017-18 season. Make sure to come out and support the Lady Wildcats on Dec. 6 at their next home game against Waubonsie Valley.
