It is appalling to see the different ways students unknowingly put themselves in danger for a momentary high or simply for pure fun. However, both the infamous Choking Game and the seemingly harmless Chubby Bunny
have claimed lives of students across the nation.
The Choking Game serves as a way to get the feeling of euphoria associated with drugs and hallucinogens without actually taking them and is achieved by cutting off oxygen to the brain through strangulation. In Illinois alone, there have been at least four different deaths of students related to the game, some even in the immediate surrounding districts. What students are failing to realize that even if they do not end up dying from the game, the lack of oxygen can result in a severe death of brain cells as well as a loss of neurological functions.
With a name like Chubby Bunny, it’s apparent why the game is hard to take seriously. Stuffing marshmallow after marshmallow into your mouth and saying “chubby bunny” each time seems like harmless fun. The fact of the matter is that at least ten people have died from choking on the jumbo marshmallows. The truly scary aspect of this game is how it moves from person to person. Whoever plays records themselves, posts the video, and then tags more people with the objective being that the people tagged play the game and repeat the process. The videos are not just limited to students. YouTube vloggers with hundreds of subscribers have joined in as well. The amount of publicity the game gets is alarming and because of its seemingly harmless nature, students as young as elementary students play.
Both games, no matter how stupid they may seem, have the potential to take a life and no matter how much precaution is taken, are both still life-threatening. Hopefully in the future, these games will lose popularity as everyone realizes the danger that lies in their momentary fun.
