Challenging the System
October 30, 2009
Numerous people have seen him on TV, read his blogs on the internet, or have seen him frequenting his corner in Downtown Naperville.
Scott M. Huber has been living out of a sleeping bag in this exact spot for the past two years and has significantly been mistreated and disrespected throughout his experience as the infamous Homeless Man.
“People throw things at me as if I’m some kind of joke,” Huber says.
Pedestrians will point fingers, laugh, and make rude comments towards his appearance as well as his own personal beliefs regarding society. People have also been known to stand on the roof of the nearby parking lot and throw pieces of cement down on his small tarp as a form of amusement.
Huber is all too familiar with the police as well. It is not an uncommon occurrence for him to get in trouble with the police for things he has never done. Almost daily, false phone calls are made to police, informing them of Huber harassing them or violating their rights. And once again, it is nothing but a cruel joke played on him by those disrespecting his stance on society.
These cruel acts go unnoticed by the police everyday. If anything, they agree that Huber’s presence is unnecessary and disruptive.
Police and city council are trying their best to remove Huber, but he is plainly implementing his first amendment rights.
Many meetings have been held to decide what should be done about this situation. Everyone is voting for Huber to leave, but he is willing to fight and stay no matter what threats the authorities impose .
There are many reasons why Huber is written off as unacceptable. They do not believe that Huber demonstrates a positive image of Naperville, and will keep pushing for him to leave his spot.
