Better Plan in Advance

October 30, 2009

ID Cards, schedules and planners are the three items that are always handed to students on the first day of school. After the first few weeks of school, students start to flip through their planners and start to count how many days they have off of school. Unfortunately, this year students do not have the luxury to know the days off. If you flipped through the planner, you may notice important dates are missing. Only major holidays are listed in the planners and even then it does not say if school will be held on those days

Last year students had the privilege of knowing when their long breaks started and what days they did not have school. Neuqua did not decide to get rid of the dates because it was not part of the design they chose for the planner. The real reason is budget cuts. These planners do not go just to Neuqua, but to the entire district. This can cost up to $30,000, so they want to save money. Each year the district goes to different companies and the companies give their bid. The lowest bid typically wins. This year the company that made the planners was going to charge extra to have all the days off added in on additional pages. Budget was the deciding factor on having that luxury in the planners.

Students will have to add the dates in themselves if they want to know when they have no school. Having the days off listed in the planners was a luxury that students had gotten used to. Some years those luxuries are no longer available to students. It all depends on what the district decides is best. It may be a hassle, but information about days off can be found on the school website.
