Catering Students Bake for the Masses
January 23, 2009
Another early morning in the life of a Neuqua teen; students are disorganized, and most struggle to stay awake on the few hours of sleep they got the night before. Energy for a teen is nonexistent at 7:20 in the morning; Red Bull and Monster are in place of a bagel and orange juice. Teachers who let students eat in class are now seen as a godsend. Breakfast has now become a snack instead of a nutritious meal. (For the brave few that wake up early enough to make it.)
But have no fear, next year students will get to save a couple extra minutes sleeping, and less time worrying about breakfast. This new change will be from Neuqua’s very own catering class, who will be offering baked goods before school next year.
Donnie Harner teaches the course, which is only available fourth period. The class requirements are Intro to Foods, Baking, as well as one semester of International and Regional Foods. Students who meet these course requirements get the chance to create, eat, as well as sell delicious food next year.
Aside from the obvious educational bonuses of having a nutritious meal before school, students will be able to save time preparing for the day, and save the stress of scrambling to make breakfast.
Neuqua already offers food from the cafeteria in the morning, but micro waved eggs are no match to a homemade muffin. Not to mention the prices will be cheaper. No longer will you have an empty stomach sitting in 1st hour; and 8th period option won’t seem so far off after all.
Next year he doom and gloom of Monday mornings will finally be matched by a nutritious meal that fills you up, and is light on your wallet.
