Students Hit Slippery Slopes in Ski Club

December 18, 2008

Four o’clock in the morning. Freezing cold. People covered from head to toe in blankets. Blustery winds blowing through the crowds.

This is not a description of the trek towards Mount Everest; it is what many Neuqua students had to face in order to obtain a spot on Neuqua’s coveted Ski Club. Throughout the months of January and February, Neuqua students and staff take two charter buses on four different Saturday trips. This club is for students who are new to skiing and snowboarding, and to those who have been on the icy slopes all their lives. Also, for students who do not own a pair of skis or a snowboard, everyplace that is on the Ski Club’s schedule has available rentals for whoever needs them. Every year it seems that more and more students vie for a spot on the Ski Club, and people wake up earlier and earlier in order get a spot. If this pattern continues, then the wait will be so long that students will start waiting in line the day before in order obtain a spot on Neuqua’s Ski Club.

These students, who disregard sleep, have a true passion for skiing, snowboarding, and socializing with fellow club members. “Ski club is awesome, it’s a great high school experience”, Said Senior Samantha Domek. Many of the members think that waking up at 4:00 in the morning for one day justifies months of fun and enjoyment. “I woke up at 3:45 in the morning; I think it was totally worth waking up for. But I’m happy that I’m a senior so I won’t have to wake up that early for Ski Club again”, Said Senior Mitch Seibert. Like Mitch, many other seniors are happy that they are done waking up extremely early. With the amount of snowfall that the mid-west has already gotten this winter, as January and February approaches, the weather will be sure to promise plenty of cushion for the students who take an unfortunate tumble. Regardless of any unfortunate events that happen to Neuqua students, their memories with Neuqua Ski club will always be memorable ones.
