Making a difference in Neuqua Valley

December 18, 2008

The ability to help others and aid those in need is a quality much needed in today’s society, and these deeds have not gone unnoticed. The Education Center is a counseling and referral center that strives to help children and teens gain self-confidence, independence, and the skills they will need as they go through life. They help children and teens understand that they are ultimately responsible for their lives and the number of things they can do to help change and better them. The Education Center also recognizes individuals in the community doing their part in helping these struggling students and recently, a staff member in Neuqua Valley’s own community was recognized for her role in helping to make a difference in students’ lives.

Pam Witt goes about her day at school just like any other day, but the conversations she holds with students and the advice she gives is enough to change lives. Being a social worker is not an easy job. It requires patience and the driving urge to help others as well as the capability of dealing with students on an emotionally and mentally sensitive basis. On November 14, 2008, Witt was awarded the “Making a Difference Award” by the Education Center of Developmental Resources in Naperville. The center recognized her efforts to help change lives of students who may be going through hard times or just need sometime to talk to. “I’m really glad Miss Witt is around. When my grandfather died, she was one of the first people I went to talk to,” said an anonymous. It is attributes like these that led a colleague of Witt’s in the Neuqua Valley guidance department to nominate her for the award.

“I was completely surprised when I was informed that I had received the award,” said Witt. “Although I was honored to receive the award, I was also very humbled…any one of Neuqua’s helpful staff are just as deserving of this award. The award ceremony was attended by the other award winners along with family and Naperville community leaders in order to commend the recipients for their efforts in aiding those in need purely because they care. “Twelve family members and ten staff members from Neuqua attended to help me celebrate,” said Witt. Even Mayor Pradel graced the award ceremony to congratulate everyone. This ceremony, however, was just one for awards and polite applause. There was a dinner and at the end was dancing, “We danced until they closed the dance floor,” said Witt.

Witt continues to grace Neuqua’s halls as someone one can depend on to listen and help in their time of need. This is what makes her so deserving of the award. “It is always an honor to be recognized, especially if you love what you are doing,” said Witt.
