Keira Knightley steps out of a limo, flips her hair, and struts down the red carpet while cameras flash all around her. The paparazzi yell, “You’re beautiful! You’re beautiful!” And she knows she is beautiful, and so do all who lay eyes on her. But then, the question is raised- What is beautiful? The campaign “You are Beautiful” answers this question by stating that beauty is not something exterior, but rather, it is the perception of self that determines true beauty. The campaign advocates that women and men alike should find beauty in themselves by coming to the realization of who they really are, because if they do, they will be able to make the world a little brighter in the process.
The campaign is simple: a message that is spread from person to person, city to city, state to state, “You Are Beautiful.” In order to spread this, workers send out stickers that have the message written on them, so that people all over the world can stick them on to various places about their town- a lamppost, the side of a building, the bottom of a ketchup bottle. The point being, people can learn something new about themselves from just those three little words. “You are Beautiful” campaigners also work together to make conspicuous forms of the message. Artists come together and create huge sculptures and paintings with the three words embedded in these works of art. The campaigners believe that if people start seeing the message more and more often, they will start to believe in their self worth, empowerment, and inner beauty. All in all, say the campaigners, “Let our statement inform you, but feel free to forget it all, and simply enjoy the message. Let this project be what it is for you.”
