Fashion Trends of the Past Make a Drastic Comeback

November 25, 2008

It is commonly said that fashion repeats itself. One of the most obvious fashion comebacks are leggings from the 1980′s. But the style of the leggings differs of course. It is more common to see girls at Neuqua wearing browns and grays, which contrast greatly with the original look of brightly colored neon leggings that we have grown to associate with the 80′s. Headbands, a somewhat newly reestablished trend, have been popular for many decades. While in the 1980′s Madonna could be seen wearing more pronounced headbands and others in neon colors, today’s headbands have become more subtle. The feather headbands, which flooded stores once again this fall, greatly compare to the many feather hats and headbands worn by flappers and other women in the 1920′s era. Modeled after a later time, the thinner braided headbands are greatly similar to the 1970′s.

Peace signs from the 1970′s have also made an appearance at many of Neuqua’s favorite stores this fall. It has become common once again to see girls wearing peace sign jewelry or a t-shirt with a peace sign printed on the front. Similarly the last time peace signs were commonly seen was also during a war. During the Vietnam War people were very vocal about being against the war voicing their desire for peace. Today our society commonly supports the troops in Iraq, while many still disagree with the war itself.

Many times we see characters on television looking back at an old high school year book from twenty years ago. When asked what they thought Neuqua students regret wearing, Senior Jessica Shaw immediately laughed and looked at her feet “UGG boots! We love them now, but I think we will look back and realize how ugly they are.” English teacher Melissa Kennedy however replied laughing, “Multicolored leggings, I think people will realize how unfashionable they were, despite their comfort.”

The repetition and critiquing change of fashion statements over decades is one of the things people love about it. No matter how many trends that are seen we are always glad to see them again.
